Every two years in the summer, Leipzig hosts organists and students of organ playing from all over the world who want to learn from internationally acclaimed organists and experienced teachers.
Since 2007, the European Organ Academy at the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig („HMT“) offers excellent concerts and master classes under the artistic direction of Prof. Stefan Engels (until 2015) and Prof. Martin Schmeding (since 2017). Students do not only learn and play at the two first-class instruments of the HMT, the Eule organ in the Great Hall and the Collon organ in the Chamber Music Hall – lessons are also held at the great Leipzig organs of St. Thomas’s or St. Micheal’s, furthermore in the Leipzig region, e. g. at the organs of Silbermann in Rötha and Freiberg or the historic Richter organ in Pomssen. In such way, the students get to know a high range of stop combinations, styles of organ building and interpretation.
Public concerts of internationally acclaimed teachers from Europe and the United States of America complete the Academy.
The VIII European Organ Academy Leipzig will take place from 5-20 August 2023. Guest lecturers are Michel Bouvard (France), Bine Katrine Bryndorf (Denmark), Ken Cowan (USA), Pieter van Dijk (The Netherlands), David Higgs (USA), Jeremy Joseph (South Africa/Austria), Jon Laukvik (Norway), Erwan le Prado (France), Martin Schmeding and Thomas organist Johannes Lang.
