Erasmus+
The EU's education programme for the higher education sector
The university has held an ERASMUS Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) since 2007, which allows it to participate in the ERASMUS+ programme for education, training, youth and sport. The programme was launched on 1 January 2014 and replaced the Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP), Youth in Action and the international EU higher education programmes.
The Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) is the general framework for all European co-operation activities. The Charter lays down the requirements for participation in all Erasmus+ activities of a higher education institution and defines the minimum requirements to be respected.
The following European countries participate in ERASMUS+: The 27 EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Turkey. Funding for the United Kingdom is only possible to a very limited extent.
- Study abroad for students (SMS)
- Internship abroad for students and graduates (SMP)
- Staff and teaching staff mobility (STA / STT)
Please refer to the following sections for detailed information on the relevant measures.
For students, Erasmus+ essentially comprises three instruments that promote mobility:
Tuition fees at the host university are waived
financial support,
credits earned abroad are recognised.
Students of all disciplines who are enrolled at HMT and who are at least in their 3rd semester at the time of their stay abroad can apply.
With the help of the ERASMUS+ programme, there are basically two options for students:
Either an internship in a company/institution or a period of study at one of the partner universities.
All students have the right to an internship or a funded study programme of at least 2 to 12 months per study cycle.
The following requirements apply for an ERASMUS+ study exchange:
Completion of the first year of study; regular enrolment at a German university
Duration: one to two semesters (Bachelor/Master/PhD), repeated funding possible
Host university: It must be a partner university of HMT and have an ERASMUS Charter (ECHE).
Switzerland has been offering its own mobility programme (Swiss European Mobility Programme) since the winter semester 2014/15.
The following requirements apply for an ERASMUS+ internship:
- Regular enrolment at a German university
- Minimum duration of stay: 60 days, repeated funding possible
- The content of the internship must be related to your studies
- Internships in your home country are generally not funded unless you do not have your main place of residence there. Proof of this must be provided in this case
The following institutions cannot act as host organisations for internships/work placements in order to avoid conflicts of interest and double funding:
- EU institutions and other EU bodies including specialised agencies (complete list via http://europa.eu/european-union/abouteu/agencies_de)
- Bodies managing EU programmes.
Application deadlines for a study programme:

If you are interested in an exchange with Switzerland, please refer to the websites of the partner universities concerned for information on deadlines. Please contact the Erasmus coordinator by December 19th.
Most of our partner universities now process the application online. You will receive the necessary link after your HMT internal application.
Please prepare the following documents for your application:
- Application Excel
- CV (English or Language of the host country)

Please bear in mind that the ERASMUS programme can only provide a grant for your study stay. The full costs of a stay abroad can often not be covered by this programme. We recommend that you also apply for funding from the Auslandsbafög or other organisations for the promotion of gifted students.
Students who are entitled to receive an ERASMUS scholarship can also actively apply for Top Ups for their stays

Staff and teacher mobility (STA/STT)
STA mobilities aim to provide teachers with professional and personal development, to promote the exchange of expertise and to familiarise them with other pedagogical methods. Last but not least, cooperation between Erasmus+ partner institutions is to be expanded and joint projects initiated.
As a further supporting measure for the internationalisation of universities, further education and training mobilities (STT) for university staff (teaching and administration) at European universities and at foreign companies/institutions are possible.
Erasmus+ funds guest lectureships at European partner universities that have a valid Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE). During their stay, the guest lecturers are to supplement teaching programmes and impart their specialist knowledge to students who are unable or unwilling to study abroad. This should include the development of joint study programmes at the partner universities and the exchange of teaching content and methods. The teaching workload is at least eight hours.
Teaching and higher education staff from a German higher education institution with ECHE may be sent to a host higher education institution with ECHE or another institution based in another programme country that is active in the labour market or in the fields of general and vocational education and training or youth for further education and training purposes.
Stays within Europe last between two days and two months. Additional funding for travelling to and from the destination is regulated in the personal financial contract.
The following group of people can be funded via STA:
- Lecturers who have a contractual relationship with the university
- Lecturers without an endowment
- Lecturers with work contracts
- Research assistants
University staff from all areas can be funded via STT.
The programme offers the following benefits:
- Reimbursement of travel and accommodation costs (according to provided rates)
- Special grants for beneficiaries with disabilities
The financial support for Erasmus+ mobilities for training and teaching purposes is based on the different costs of living in the target countries (‘programme countries’). Standardised daily rates apply for funding from German universities. ‘Profits’ from the funding must be taxed by the funding recipients.
Please refer to the document ‘Teacher/staff mobility’ for detailed information on the funding rates.
The following documents must be submitted to the Erasmus Office as early as possible:
- Mobility Agreement
- Invitation from the partner university (STA)
- Programme schedule or description of the planned further education/training (STT)
- Approved business trip application (2 months before the planned mobility so that the A1 certificate can be issued in good time) (to be requested from the HMT budget)
Further information on staff mobility and application options can be obtained directly from the Erasmus+ coordinator.
Here you will find the necessary documents and information on teacher and staff mobility.
