Getting started ... in Leipzig

Leipzig is one of the liveliest and most dynamic cities in Germany. Whether it is a city of music, a trade fair city or a city of books - Leipzig has been an important centre of Europe for centuries.

Famous poets such as Lessing, Klopstock, Gottsched and Goethe were drawn here. Philosophers such as Leibniz, Nietzsche and Bloch have influenced the city's thinking to this day. And Leipzig is particularly famous throughout the world for its musicality, as the city has a long tradition that goes back to the work of Bach and Mendelssohn Bartholdy in particular.

Art, science and culture still characterise the city, which was founded in 1165, today: several thousand scientists conduct research at almost 20 non-university research institutions, the university and the city's six other colleges. The ‘Leipzig School’ and the ‘cotton mill’ are leaders in the world of art. The Thomaner Choir, the Gewandhaus Orchestra, the many museums and a lively theatre scene characterise the city's cultural life.

After the peaceful revolution, Leipzig developed into one of the booming regions of eastern Germany and is now experiencing a renaissance as a logistics and high-tech centre in the heart of Europe. Today, Leipzig is characterised by economic dynamism, a high level of culture, many green oases and, last but not least, an outstanding quality of life for families, children and also for the growing number of older people in our society. A stroll through the city is well worthwhile.
