Györgyi Farkas performs worldwide as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral performer. For many years she has been the principal bassoon at the English Baroque Soloists under Sir John Eliot Gardiner, at the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, at Collegium1704 under Václav Luks, at the Bachakademie Stuttgart under Hand-Christoph Rademann and at Orfeo Budapest under György Vashegyi. Györgyi plays historical bassoon instruments from the 16th century to the late 19th century.
Born in Budapest, Györgyi Farkas studied music theory and bassoon at the Béla Bartók Conservatory in her hometown. Her interest in early music led her to Switzerland at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, where she studied historical bassoon in the class of Claude Wassmer and graduated with a soloist diploma in 1997. She then completed postgraduate studies at the Frankfurt Musikhochschule with Christian Beuse.
Since 2011 Györgyi Farkas is the head of the class for historical bassoon at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Leipzig. She was a juror at the EUBO selection course and is a lecturer at several master courses. Numerous CD recordings document her musical activity as a specialist for historical bassoons.
